Burton Grammar School Old Boys' Web-site

General School web-site.

This site is a repository for downloading documents for Old Boys of Burton Grammar School, such as my newsletters. This site will be retained as an informal repository following the closure of the Association.

Newsletters

There was a good response to my request for contributions to bgs@cicsplex.co.uk as you can see in the Newsletter.

The 2024 newsletter is available here in two formats:

I have written, with a link to this page, to everyone who provided an email address and gave consent for me to keep it on file. There are several people who did give consent but did not provide an email address, so if you didn't get the email, please let me know, and I will ensure your email goes out next time.

If you spot any errors in the newsletter, please report them to bgs@cicsplex.co.uk, so I can correct them.
Eric Bodger (1956-62)

Future Newsletters

There wasn't enough material for me to put out a newsletter in 2023, but several people have provided input for this year. I will try to publish another newsletter if people send sufficient input, but I can't guarantee it will be as soon as 2025.

No Printed Newsletter is planned. Since the Association no longer exists, there is no funding to print and distribute paper newsletters.

Condolences

Those I knew about at the time were included in past Newsletters. If you know of other alumni who have passed away, I should be pleased to receive obituary content at bgs@cicsplex.co.uk, to publish in future.

As you will see in the newsletter, several Old Boys have died since 2022. I am sorry not to have noted the following:

Please let me know of any omissions -- ideally with an obituary and photographs I can publish.

Archive Room

Bob Andrews and Graham Marchment have produced an A3 poster about the history of Burton's linked institutions, whose memorabilia are available for view in the attic of the Burton Club. You can read more about the items there in the 2024 Newsletter.

Dissolution of the BGS Old Boys' Association

Covid-19 meant we could not hold an AGM in 2020, which was planned to bring the Association to an end. President John Taylor therefore wrote to members, asking them to vote on the committee's request for the Association to be wound up, as planned at the 2019 AGM. The result was a 130 in favour and 6 against, so the Association was wound up on 26 October 2020.

It is sad that the Association could not continue into its second century, but numbers had been declining over the 45 years since our School closed. Covid-19 frustrated our intention of going out with a bang; we had planned a 2020 dinner as a major celebration, but were not able to hold it until autumn 2022. However, I hope to continue posting Newsletters on this site for as long as Old Boys continue to provide sufficient material, and will email a link to all who consented (or will consent) to their email address being retained (it has to be explicit consent to comply with GDPR). If you haven't received anything from me this year, please send an email to bgs@cicsplex.co.uk stating that you wish your details to be added to my database so you can receive Old Boys' communicatipms.

The minutes of the 2019 AGM are here.
